Celgene Scientist II, Translational Development (Myelofibrosis) in San Francisco, California

Celgene is a global biopharmaceutical company leading the way in medical innovation to help patients live longer, better lives. Our purpose as a company is to discover and develop therapies that will change the course of human health. We value our passion for patients, quest for innovation, spirit of independence and love of challenge. With a presence in more than 70 countries, and growing - we look for talented people to grow our business, advance our science and contribute to our unique culture.

The Scientist II will contribute to developing strategy and will be responsible for experimental design and execution of translational research studies supporting drug programs in late-stage clinical development for myeloid malignancies, with an emphasis on myelofibrosis.

Ideally, the successful candidate will have hands-on research experience in hematology or immunology preferably in myelofibrosis, as well as in pharmacology. Experience in advanced flow cytometry and assay development are required.

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Develop strategy, design, execute and interpret experiments to characterize drug mechanisms of action/efficacy, understand mechanisms of resistance, and inform rational combinations.

  • Process and analyze tissue samples and cell lines, including primary human and murine blood, bone marrow, and lymphoid tissues, utilizing FACS, lenti/retroviral transduction and functional assays.

  • Use in-vivo models and ex-vivo cultures to model relevant aspects of disease and drug pharmacodynamics to inform clinical biomarkers to guide selection of dose-schedule and understanding of mechanisms of efficacy.

  • Lead scientifically in area of expertise and stay up-to-date with relevant clinical and non-clinical publications. Interact with project teams, academic collaborators and contract laboratories to design in vitro and in vivo studies to evaluate drug candidates

  • Develop and review study proposals, critically review data from contract labs and academic collaborators

  • Present summaries of work at group meetings, internal forums and scientific conferences

  • Author study reports, assay protocols, patent applications, peer-reviewed publications

  • Potentially mentor other research staff through instruction, coaching and guidance.

Skills/Knowledge Required:

  • Ph.D. degree in hematology, immunology, biochemistry, molecular or cellular biology, with at least 4 years of academic research or R&D experience in hematological diseases, inflammation and/or fibrosis, as a bench scientist, supported by publication record, ideally as first or senior author. Research experience in myelofibrosis is a plus.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of animal models of hematopoietic diseases, tumor biology, cancer immunology and pharmacology.

  • Hands-on experience with phenotypic and functional assays used in hematology-oncology with understanding of cellular, biochemical and molecular readouts: these include analysis of primary samples (e.g. blood, bone marrow, immune cells) by multi-color flow cytometry; transduction and differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells and immune cells; colony forming unit assays and immune cell functional assays, primary co-culture systems, drug cytotoxicity, proliferation/apoptosis, multiplexed gene and cytokine profiling; chemotaxis, ELISA, Western blot, RT-PCR, CRSPR/Cas9/RNAi, and next generation sequencing methods. Additional experience with inflammation-fibrosis assays is a plus.

  • Working knowledge of pharmacology studies utilizing in vivo models used in hematology and immuno-oncology research, including GEMMs, isogenic lines, and disseminated syngeneic and xenogeneic/xenograft models.

  • The candidate will be a critical experimentalist, results oriented, enjoy working in the lab and is comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.

  • Ability to develop a research plan, conduct experimental work with accurate and detailed record keeping.

  • Excellent organizational skills, with the ability to efficiently manage and prioritize multiple projects, internal and external collaborations.

  • Ability to interpret and summarize scientific data in an accurate, critical and concise manner.
